Default Console issues

I put my console back together and half killed myself trying to get it back in the car. I didnt think it was gonna be that hard.

Anyway it dosent seem to be sitting right. My shifter hits it in first and really moves it in reverse.. Am I missing something..I ut new carpet and an underlayment in it. Maybe the carpet is too thick?. Console seems to be in the right spot to bolt up.

I have a '70 and if yours is the original the material it's made of - and thru wear and tear - the sides seem to buckle causing problems. Just make sure the console is far enough forward - the "U" bracket that supports the front and radio might also need to be tightened.

Does there seem to be too much room for 2nd and 4th, and does it hit in 3rd too? It sounds like the shifter console is 'back' and cocked to the left a little.

Alan

It dosent hit 2 or 3 or 4 but looks to be straight. Seems like if I move it to clear the shifter it will be crooked as heck.. Does yours come close in reverse??

i had the same problem wth my 70 rebuild. i shimmed the shifter bracket per the aim and it helped somewhat, but finally changed to the short throw shifter holes and have clearance in 1st and 3rd now. reverse still hits the plate, but these cars were designed to go forward anyway!

If you can't move the console enough, I think JNB has the answer.

Merlinhaggard , sounds like this was not happening before you took the console out.

When I re installed mine last December I ran into the same thing.

What I found was that I had used too large a washer where the gaude bezel studs pass thruy the front upper part of the shifter console. this prevented me from sliding the console fully forward.

This is most evident by looking at the spot where the left and right dash panels come into contact with the shifter console.

Look at this spot to see if they are touching or is there a gap?

That gap will confirm that you do not have the console fully foward.

Is so that 3/8 to 1/2" will cause your shifter to hit the front edge of the cut out in the console.

Hope this helps
