Default 72 exhust tips

Just droped my rebuilt 350 back in my car and would like to go to 2 1/2 " exhaust. My question is did the LT1 and the 454 vettes have 2 1/2" exhaust tips or 2" as I don't see different tips in the supply catalogs that I have for the 72's.

2 inch tips. The mufflers had 2 1/2 inlet and 2 inch outlets.

I did put on a set of 2 1/2 Flowmasters and they had a 2 1/2 outlet. I took out the 2 inch pipe in the tips and hogged out the hole and welded in a 2 1/2 pipe. Looks stock and you can't tell anything was done.

No matter how big the pipes were on the cars the exhaust tips were all the same.

2" pipes out the back of all mufflers

My Muffler outlet was 2 1/2" so I cut the back out and welded a ss plate with 2 1/2 pipe attached.

Thanks for the Info. Is there much to be gained by cutting the 2" out and adding the 2 1/2" since it seems GM didn't think so?

That far down the exhaust there is really no performance to be gained. The exhaust has cooled a lot by then so you don't need as big a pipe. I did it because the mufflers were 2 1/2 and it was something different. Unless you have a real heavy breathing SB or BB, 550 or greater HP you do not need to do this.
