I have been wanting to add a transmission temp gauge in place of the clock on my 74 and came up with an idea. Use a coolant temp gauge and sending unit. Order a set of white face gauge stickers. Scan the temp gauge sticker. Change the words to read trans temp and have a decal shop print it. Will this work? Any thoughts or ideas would be great.

Another option, you can do like I did when I re-did my interior. Find a gauge cluster from an '80's Vette that has the oil temp gauge, and install that cluster. You can even use the stock engine oil sender, only install it in the trans, and run your own wiring from the gauge to the sender. It'll read the oil temp, but from the trans instead of the engine. The cluster 'should' bolt right into your bezel, and you 'might' even be able to use your stock wiring harness for the new cluster with the exception of the new gauge.
I added a late C3 80s oil temp. gauge in place of the clock a long time ago. The 80s needle is white & needs to be changed to match.
The gauge says OIL TEMP on it.
There have been several topics on this from the beginning of the forum.

I'm not sure if that's going to work on a 74 bezel or not. The 68-76 bezels are quite different from the 77 and 78-82 bezels.
The 78 up bezel cluster will not fit 68-77 dash w/o mods & more importantly will not fit 68-76 console w/o mods. One could change the 74 console & gauge needles ...
I changed to the later bezel awhile back after replacing the clock w/ the later oil temp. gauge though it fit in the 77 cluster. This makes the gauge openings the same.
Ok so then will a gauge from an 80's Vette fit in a 74 bezel without a lot of modifications? There is a swap meet coming up at the end of April and it would be helpful to know what year gauges will fit in my bezel.
I looked at what they offer and decided that was not an option. I can't stand having all of the gauges not matching. It may seem like a small thing to some but it would drive me nuts.

77-82 gauges are the same, the only difference is the "wings" on the side of the 77 bezel that meet up with the earlier-style deep-inset dash panels.
Since I have an 80, that has a clock (that does in fact work, but I don't need it, as my stereo has a clock and so does my wrist )
Could I take a 2 1/16" temp gauge (like the B&M) and put it in place of the clock, and IF SO, would I have to mod it so that clock would NOT be able to be put back if in future I wanted to do that????
