Maybe this should be int he "Tech" section, but......Can anyone tell me what is the correct material used on 69 seat backs? Were they a kinda heavier black fiberglass or where they a lighter plastic? Thanks, john
anybody to second this opinion? I have 2 nice ones that are a heavier black fiberglass material, just want to make sure they are the right ones for a 69, thanks, john

John,
I'm not quite sure the originals were fiberglass, based on the way they degrade with sharp-edged cracks, maybe ABS? They are definitely heavier than the repops with a dark color (charcoal).
Originals should be fiberglass. ZIP is advertising they have fiberglass seat backs, $55 each, in the current Corvette Fever issue. As far as I've seen most vendors sell plastic ones.
ok, now I'm confused..really...............anybody with an original car that can verify? The set I recently bought are a heavy fiberglass, very dense stuff, but the cracked up one on my 69 looks like plastic?
I don't know if I'm helping or adding to the confusion ... I have an original 70, and the seat back is a glossy black, has a fiber texture, but resembles ABS. On the rounded edges where the screw holes are located, I can see short fiber strands, and just above center is the raised number 3974092. So what is it really?

The 68-69 NCRS Tech Information Manual calls them 'plastic'. So ????

Technically, fiberglass is plastic, sometimes called FRP, fiber reinforced plastic.
The seat backs do appear to contain fibers and look a lot like fiberglass from the body of the car...but as they degrade they develop sharp cracks all the way through, unlike fiberglass.
