With your car's Black exterior, I think a Black block with the L82 valve covers and aluminum intake would look sharp.

From Joe Lucia on the NCRS Tech Board when I asked what the original color was:

1979 engines were painted "corporate blue". The last use of Chevrolet
orange was in early to mid-1977 model year. I believe the first use of
"corporate black" was for the 1982 model year, although it could have
been a year earlier.

I think orange depends on the exterior color of the car. If you put your gaskets on right you shouldn't have any leaks with a fresh motor. Shouldn't

FWIW - TRACO painted engines light gray because you could see oil leaks easily.

I just finished my engine paint for my 383 build on my 80 L82. I went with Chevy Orange paint kit from POR-15. You can put this .02 in the pile.

I bought them off Ron at http://www.blackmountainprecision.com/

He made two sets. Each one is made of a single block of aluminum. Im not sure if he'll make any more because of the cost of aluminum.

I actually should have left the engine black, it looked pretty good that way

Here's a link on painting the chrome

There's always oil dye and a black light if it comes to that.
