Pulling my engine and revamping my engine compartment on my 79 L82. What color should I paint the block? Original Chevy Blue? Or Black?
I'm torn. The original Blue looks classic, but the Black looks tough and is easier to keep clean and touch up.... Engine compartment will be semi-gloss/low-gloss black. Engine has a RPM air gap intake, Chrome bolt kit, Black L82 Valve covers, chrome timing cover and chrome oil pan. K&N Extreme lid. No pollution stuff. Chrome Hooker Side Exhaust.
The car itself is black over silver two tone, kinda of like a pace car.
I like to use the Dupli-Color Engine Enamel color, Cast Coat Iron. The gray looks very good to me...better than black, but I like dark colored engine blocks. Most crate engines from GM and Dodge come in black and I really like it.
Chevy orange, mine was corporate blue originally and when I re-did the engine I painted it Chevy orange. It looks much better in my opinion, besides Chevy's were always orange until they started choking them in the mid to late 70's and you know what happens when you choke someone, they turn blue. The orange really pops against the black engine compartment, especially when you dress the engine with chrome and aluminum.
Of your 2 choices I'd say blue. Mine was black when I got it and I hated it, it didn't stand out in a black engine compartment. I painted mine Chevy orange because in my opinioin, all Chevy V8's should be chevy orange. Yes it's supposed be blue but I don't care.

I had a '74 Z28 that I painted the engine Cast Coat. It did look good also.
You can do anything you want, and gray is okay, but in my opinion Chevrolet's are orange. But I'm probably older than you. Blue was a "Corporate" color introduced for all GM engines in the dog days of the 70's when GM was phasing out it's divisional engines in an effort to make the Chevrolet small block the universal V8 for all it's vehicles. Blue is not faithful to Chevrolet and reminds me of the dog days, unless you go further back to the Blue Flame Six.
Although I voted for blue since my Vette is also a 79, I painted my block with hi-temp aluminum. It looked great on the engine stand but mounted in the car, you really don't see much of it. So I suppose it really don't matter too much what color you use.

Which will look better???
Does the air gap intake fit under the under the hood?
P.S. I like black.

Yes it fits fine. The Air Gap RPM Intake has the same dimensions as the normal RPM manifold. Air Gap RPM, Holley 650, K&N 3 inch filter.
You'll need a 3/4 inch drop base for your air filter to fit or run a 2 inch filter on a flat base. This combo will not work with a factory air cleaner box. I still have about 3/4 inch between air cleaner and hood.
