Hey guys, I'm usually up in the C4 section but I need your opinion on something ........I have the chance to buy a '76 that needs a bunch of work. Body is in aweful condition paint wise but sound. Engine is basiclly new but been setting for 14 years. Vette has been covered but the cover is shot. Don't know a lot more details at the moment. What might be a price offering range for this? Thanks in advance.
My brother picked up a '76 that was in somewhat similar condition. That car is what transformed me into a C3 lover.
He payed too much for the car at $4k. He has already invested another $5K into it and hasn't even touched the body / paint work. I asked him to sell it and take the loss, but he won't. He had the following problems that needed new or replacement:
Floor pans
Frame repair (just in front of rear wheels)
Brakes (Calipers, lines, master cylinder)
Exhaust
Trailing arm rear wheel bearings
Rebuild of rear differential
U-joints all around
He is not mechanically inclined and never should have bought a car in this condition. None the less, he still has a way to go. So, if you are really serious, and knowing the current conditon of the car, I would not go over $3k without some serious investigation.
If its as rough as you say, I agree that $3000 would be tops. Even if the engine was new 14 years ago, it is isn't new now. No telling whats going on with now if it hasn't been started consistently.
Take some pics and let us look at them. We may be able to give better opinions then.
