there's an white/clear plastic container on the passenger's side of the engine bay in my '71. don't have a picture handy, sorry. anyway, this canister is missing it's cap. i was told it's the overflow tank? does that sound right? anyway, wondering if anyone has a clue where i can get a cap for it. thanks!
Is sounds to me like it must be the windshield washer bottle. The cap should be connected to the w/s pump with a hose. Can the container be removed easily for filling? Do you see it here? http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~partsort

In my car it's on the driver's side, but mine is a '77. I don't think what you're talking about is a radiator overflow because in '71 they used metal expansion tanks.
If you have a plastic tank on the passenger side it's either a washer fluid bottle or someone before you installed an overflow to replace the expansion tank.
Some 1970-1972 Corvettes were fitted with aluminum expansion tanks...some had the brass tank....and some had no tank at all...generally,those fitted with aluminum radiators got the alum expansion tank...and those with copper brass radiators got no exp tanks...except LS5 vettes had CB Rads/brass tanks...
The brass tanks were 3" dia x 20" long..
Windshield washer tanks were white plastic located in right inner wheel well...the 1971 washer reservoir had a long filler neck...all A/C equipped had a off-white flexible bag to hold washer fluid...
i think if your car came without a/c you should have the white overflow canister for the radiator. you should check and see where it's connections run to to verify what it is. It could also be the windshield washer reservoir, does it have the long neck extending upwards and is it behind the wheel? It could be either ... take some pics when you can. Zip, Eckler's, MidAmerica all will have the correct cap for this item...just have to identify it first!
i'll go compare it to those pics. what i can tell you is that the car DOES have a/c. also, the tank doesn't have a long neck. the windshield wipers do work (but the spray function doesn't and the tank is empty - which could be a hint that this likely IS the wiper fluid reservoir.
oh hey - i saw this pic in another post, and this pic is of a '77 while mine is a '71, but i'm pretty sure my unknown tank/reservior is the same, at least in the same position, as the slightly yellowed tank at the far end of this pic. (mine is white though - like the one durango boy posted). however, mine has nothing coming out of it! so do we think that what i have in my car is the unnattached wiper reservior? bear in mind, of course that my car is a '71. don't know if that makes a diff..
Check for a windshield washer bag located in the left fender at the firewall. That is where it should be on a '71 w/ A/C. My guess is that the bag failed and, rather than spend some big buck$ for the 'correct' parts [and a lousy system], the owner put a later version washer tank in your right fender area.

I agree completely with 7T1vette....check and see if that bag is there. If your car came with A/C there should be no reservoir on the passenger side but a bag hanging from two hooks on the firewall near the vaccuum reservoir.
hey, c'mon! i mean, it IS buried somewhere at my in-laws house some 40 miles east. my wife made me get rid of much of my "corvette library" seeing as how we live in a small loft and those books started taking up a lot of room.
but who needs richard prince, anyway, when you've got the best bunch of corvette guys on earth at your fingertips!!!

Sorry about the link. I went to Corvette Central C3 site and typed "windshield washer bottle" in search. There was a page of different C3 bottles. Sorry it didn't help.
