This has probably already been covered, but i was wondering about the practicality of adding a 3rd brake light to a 1980 corvette (to avoid rear ends). I was also thinking about adding LEDs around the perimeter of the reverse lights, behind the red reflector. Has anyone done this? thanks,
Steve
I have a third brake light mounted up high in the rear window, as mentioned above. Simple wiring and only two screws needed to hold it up to the halo panels.
I got it off of Ebay about ten years ago...Saudi Vette bought one a few years back, he might still have the link to the seller.
Sounds and looks OK to do.... but I just can't imagine that a car [or even a truck] behind you can't see those BIG, lighted round things on the back of your car {unless it's less than 3 feet away from your back bumper....in which case the extra light won't help a bit, anyway}.
Any idea of that could be mounted inside the car? Would hate to spoil C3 body lines with an exterior "wart"
Wart, I'm sure you could mount inside in a 78-82 because of the extra room in the rear. I have one our 79, but I added it to the roof before the car was painted. It blends in well you really don't notice it, some may think different of it.
mine is a licence plate frame style from billet specialties..works good.[IMG][/IMG]
I would like that except it's too low and shrouded by the plate surround. I'd bet that if you stood up to take that picture you wouldn't be able to see it. Have you sat in a car or truck behind your Vette to see if it's even visible to other drivers up close?

yeah but the big lighted round things are a fairly new addition - before that i had dim-dull-single bulb things...and then only 2..now the LEDs definitly overpower the 3rd brakelight
I've installed four 1968 brake lights on my 70. The 70 only has two brake lights, and if you take the lens off and compare it with a 68 lens - look on the inside- you see that each 68 lens emits more light than a 70 lens. (The outer periphery of the 70 lens is painted on the inside.) So now, when I hit the brakes I will have four large bright red lights. (I've also installed a 68 rear valence with the 68 back up lights and installed a new 68 rear harness.)
I used to belong to a Corvette club and I was surprised at the incidence of people who had been rear ended in their Corvette. My 68 has been rearended twice (once with me driving the car) and my 70 has been rearended also. Recently this year I went to a Corvette club activity meeting and once again someone showed up and displayed a bunch of photos of his recently rearended C4. He was stopped at a red light and someone in a SUV (truck?) just ran into him. The driver said they didn't even see his car.
I'd like to install a third brake light also somewhere in the top of the 70's rear window.
