The standard C3 tank can hold around 14 gal (or a little less). From a normal use situation, you will probably be getting fill-ups of 10-12 gallons [otherwise running on 'empty']. In city driving, thats a fill-up every 150-180 miles.

The rubber bladder in the tank may have failed, and is collapsing in on the inside of tank, either giving you false level readings, or limiting how much fuel you can put in.

Not sure if the 1980s are different but I think my tank holds just shy of 24 gallons!! From what I can remember from filling up last fall

I read somewhere that pre-78 cars where 17 gallon and 78 and later cars where 25 gallon.

It's possible that the bladder might hinder the pickup, and block the flow of fuel, but for the most part it's a capacity thing.

Mine was in rough shape, so i removed the bladder, and actually got about another full gallon of space. I now have a 16 gallon tank.

The owners manual for my 70 says 18 or 20. I think it was 18 when I filled it from bone dry.
