my 79 sounds like something is rubbing on the drive shaft or the axles, but nothing is there. IDEAS?
Can't say for sure if it is the same but my 78 was making a "metal rubbing" sound everytime I moved the car in forward or reverse... It was coming from the right rear... I jacked the car up and could not see a darn thing that looked like it should be making noise when I spun the wheel by hand... I pulled the rotor off & found that one for the parking brake springs had broke on one end and had worked it's way between the brake shoe and the rotor... "No-more noise"
I have an noise, it is indeed the E-brake cable under certian stress it'll rub,.
also,.. if your diff dose not have posi-diff lube it will indeed make lots of rubbing sounds,.. a good flush and proper GM posi-diff treatment will prolly fix er for ya!

I've had both wheels off the rear end, checked, and all looks fine. The noise is mainly when I accelerate. it sounds like metal rubbing on metal. It sounds like rit, rit, rit, rit! Like them sound effects. I need more help, PLEASE.
Hey like Choppahead said have you tried the GM lube and the rear end oil change ? it will make a noise like Something in the drive shaft My 77 use to do it after I would get the rear end up to temp the back end would start cherning like it was mixing somthing up back there, did the rear end grease and the 2-Bottles of special lube and presto the clutches in the rear end turned fine and never made the noise again .do the easy things FIRST.
