I just put new heads on my car. I checked the lifters and some were worn so I replaced all of them. When I stab the throttle it sounds like I'm getting a backfire in the carb. The car runs rough at higher RPM. The exhaust also sounds louder and my chrome headers are turning very blue. I was told to set the lifters one turn down on the cam base. Could these new lifters be pumping up at higher RPM and keeping the valves from seating, causing combustion gasses to backfire into the carb. I only have about 20 miles driven at this time. Do I have to put on more miles to break the new lifters in?

Hate to answer my own problem buttttttt, I found my answer. I cut open an old valve cover to adjust the rockers without getting an oil bath and there it was. 7 valves going up and down with 1 valve not moving = no lobe on cam!!! Sucks
Thanks for your info. I'm getting a cam & lifter set. A rebuild is planned in the future, just not now. I'm hoping to do a lot of driving this year as long as the bearings hold up.
