I'm a C5-6 guy looking at a C3 and was wondering about side pipes. I have heard horror stories about the heat but would appreciate any positive or negative feedback.
Welcome to the C3 section...hope to see you driving a C3 soon.
The heat can be battled. Removing the carpet, and laying down a layer of a product called Reflectix, will greatly reduce the heat absorbed into the cabin. You can also make shields that screw onto the underside of the cabin, covering the foot wells from the exhaust.
I have a '77 with side pipes and after a few hours of driving the heat has soaked into the cabin and does get hot. I layed down some sound deadening material and jute under the carpet to help guard against heat.

Thanks!
I had always heard that the side pipes helped remove some of the heat from the interior by getting the exhaust out from under the car. I got my side pipes Jet Hot coated but my C3 isn't anywhere near drivable yet.
I have the Jet-Hot coated hookers on my 72 and they will definately burn you getting out if you're not careful. However, the cabin temps are MUCH cooler than when I had the stock exhaust in place.

From: Part breakage is just weakness leaving my Stingray
I can't say that I've ever noticed a significant difference in the heat in the interior. However, the pipes and especially the header tubes are super hot. You'll learn a new way to get in and out of your vette or else...
As for the upside. It's hard to beat the sound especially with JCL sprial baffles. They also make the car look very cool. Of course I'm biased, but who on this site isn't.

Thats strange because I can literally leave my hand on mine for as long as I want...they just dont get that hot
..... gotta a question about Hooker headers & sidepipes that are ceramic-coated:
lota guys talk about Jet-Hot'd Hookers, but are the sets you buy, like this,
Jet-Hot'd (brand), or is this a Hooker-applied ceramic coating, LIKEJet-Hot (and is there a difference between Jet-Hot brand and manufacturer-applid coatings, and if-so, which is better) ?
I had headers for my dragster ceramic-coated byJet-Hot in '94, and although I no-longer own the car, they still look perfect.

Thanks-in-advance!
the sets u buy at jet hot are the same BUT summits ceramic headers are prone to rust within a year cuz they don't coat the inside. just buy them direct from jethot plus jethot has better prices than summit and the warrantee
