I'm starting to rebuild my first 'Vette - coupe, 1969, 350 ci engine, 4 speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, it seems that Bubba has had ample time to try out his wild ideas in my car . The latest one that I've discovered has me stumped, so I'm hoping that someone could help me out and actually knows what this is. I found it while working on fixing my taillights. It was attached behind the left rear wheel, pointing downwards, just to the left of the gas tank. At first glance, I assumed it was a horn - but why would it be placed in the rear? I've managed to disassemble it from the frame, and then traced the wires (half of which were just hanging freely, not capped and not attached) and found that they go under the jack storage compartment, where they went into a flasher (#552, same as the emergency lights flasher, i believe) and then into the second item in the pictures, which had a cap but was completely corroded, as you can see. My guess is that it's a relay of some sort. Finally, the last of the wires I traced to the fuse box, where it plugged into an unmarked spot, just above the ignition wire - my guess is that it's an extra power source for an auxiliary add on? If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

Sounds like the factory alarm system. It ws optional until 72 then it was std. Just a horn behind the LR wheel with door and hood switch. You might as well have left the keys in it as those systems were a joke.

Ahh, thank you. This finally explains why I have a lock that's not connected to anything sticking out of the rear, just above the letters. Considering that this system had half the wires cut, and the connectors and relays were rusted beyond salvage, do you think that I can junk the whole system, splice it out of the hood and door alarm switches, and just forget that it ever existed? I guess I'll be bubba in this case!

Oh, I will definitely keep the system, and maybe I'll even put it back in when I get around to doing the full restoration that I've got in mind. So far, everything I've worked on and replaced has been carted and boxed into a little corner - I guess another box is on the way. Thank you for the quick replies and for helping me figure this thing out. On a random note, do you know where I can find a replacement resistor, specifically the one that's attached to the brake light switch and is meant to cancel out static in the radio (not a big deal at the moment, I guess, since there's no radio to be spoken of in the car at the moment)
