A round 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 will sound better than a 4x6.
2 way or 3 way-depending on what you find.
Thanks, blckslvr79.
I think you got me into that - heard about other's good results with 5 1/4. My radio is the original one from 71 (mono) and I'm aiming at the 8-10 ohm. The dash speakers are 20/110 watt, 4 ohm, so, what should the watt be on the new ones? I know I'll never get premium sound - just aiming at the best possible solution with my original radio and without having speakers on the outside of the kick panels.
You don't want high wattage speakers....they are very inefficient by design and take a lot of power so that they will reproduce good sound quality. Your Delco unit only has 16 watts (rms) and it doesn't reproduce sound all that well (with the piddily amp design it has). I would still keep the original head in there, just for originality. Buy speakers in the 20-40 watt range. To match impedence and get the best sound quality possible, replace the dash units with new 8 ohm, 4x6 tweeters (or 2-stage tweeters with a dome high frequency unit) and put [8 ohm] 5-1/4 round or 5x7 oval speakers (for mid-range/bass) in the kick panels. Tie each side [dash and kick speaker] together in series and then tie the two sides together in parallel...that will give you 8 ohms total and be a good match with the amp. The four speakers will make the sound much fuller and the tweeters reflecting off the glass will produce crisp highs--as good as it can get with the Delco head, anyway.

Easy, 5.25-6.5" in doors if you have PW. Remove dash speakers.
Some 5.25 can be fitted to kick panel location. A mounting plate must be used to separate the front from back sound waves to prevent cancellation for better bass. If the tweeters are adjustable, tilt up & back towards the center. 5x7 would be better than 4x6 if you find some that fit about 5 3/4" H X 4" W.

I was thinking something like these for behind my kick panels.
Does anyone have photos of a mounted speaker here?
Durango Boy has done a bunch of these and has a lot of pics. It looks pretty good with them in the kick panels and if you go thru glassing the mounts into the panel and repaint it they look even better instead of like something that was added on.
Sure some of the smaller speakers will fit behind the panel but the panel and it's limited venting will actually block most of your sound waves.
That being said, installing anything other than a stock rated speaker on your stock radio will actually make it all sound worse.
I look at it like this. If you want to keep your factory radio you pretty much have to deal with the sound you get from low watt high impedance speakers. If you want good sound, you have to get over the stock radio and get something modern and well planned out.
