This time its diffrent, I want to go back to the stock radio that my car was equiped with but I cant find ANYONE who sell it, I checked Mid-America and Zip Vette and nothing but aftermarket, does anyone still make the old stock radios?
Also, how do I find out if my car came with the normal radio or the stereo? in the vin? I have a black book but I couldent find anything regaurding the stereo/radio aside from the fact that I could have either one as an option
Riks has a lot of different radios, they have a standard stock one. I know they also sell ones that look stock, but are actual a head unit for an mp3 player.
I had my 82 original Delco serviced by United Radio. Would be worth a call to see if they had a model-correct radio. Bet they wind up with some old ones.
I ordered a duplicate dealer invoice from some GM company; it listed the original options. Cost $50. If interested I'm sure I could dig up where I got that; some much more organized than me probably already has it
You can determine which radio you had by removing your right-side dash panel...if your speaker wiring is still intact. Also, the stereo version had a two-transitor "convector" (early name for an external amplifier stage on an aluminum heat-sink) that was attached just below the upper dash pad and behind that right-side dash pad. In fact, your convector may still be there if it was a stereo unit--lots of folks didn't even know it was there and just removed the radio receiver. Also, the right and left side speakers had different color wire pairs [same color for ground but different colors for the signal lines right & left]; mono units had the same color speaker wire pairs.
Original radios aren't cheap...probably more than a good 'new' head unit. But they are the real thing and very nostalgic. (Nostalgic sounding, too.)
looks like thats where I need to go, thanks a lot!
when your talking about behind the dash, is it the (professional) thing directally under my right speaker? it looks like a heat distributor, if it is, thats what is comming with all of the normal (not stereo) radio on that site you linked me to, so Im thinking I have a normal Radio
(and if you were wondering it dosent look like that anymore, that was the first time I removed the dash)
Thanks again
Miles

The convector you show in the photo is a mono set-up...it has just one transistor (single channel). The stereo version has two transistors...one for each stereo channel.
