I used the original style 3M butyl tape, a 15' roll did it. Available at autobody stores for about $12. I think it is 3/8 diameter.
I have read that most guys now use urethane caulk, but also that it makes removing the windshield very tough without breaking it. So, I modified this a bit and laid the butyl down on the w/s frame, and laid a bead of urethane on the butyl hoping for an improved seal. This way, if I ever want to pull the windshield, it should be a bit easier to cut the seal between the butyl and the frame itself.
BTW, I didn't break mine either and the frame rust was minimal.
I pulled mine because of rust in #2 body mounts and expected to quite a bit up in the windshield, but did not for whatever reason!

That is exactly how I do a w/s.
I think it is the best way to go.
I would suggest that you get some help. You want to set it square in the opening and it's tough to see both sides at once. I think the glass guys have some rubber blocks they set the bottom edge on and then roll the glass into place.
