Default Steering Column - Should I...

From what I can remember, it worked fine. Wondering if I should get it rebuilt as a preventative maintenance or do some cosmetic work? Any suggestions on paint, maintenance, etc...

If the bearings are good and the T&T is tight no need to take it apart. The lower bearing is usually the worst one. You do not need to take it apart to replace that bearing. Cosmetic can be done without to much trouble.

change out the lower bearing while you have it out. Just be carefull handeling the column while it is out. That 77 turn signal arm snaps off easy

There are a couple pics of the lower bearing change at the end of these pics for you.

OK, I did a little "light" disassembly. Is the plastic part supposed to be cracked and is that thin seal ring supposed to be split under the retainer cap? Also, is the bearing I should replace the one pressed onto the center shaft?

I feel a big can of worms coming on here. I'm wondering if I should hurry up and put it back together before I get in too deep (again).

By the way, there is some play between the shaft and bearing.

That metal ring is what is left of the bottom portion of your lower bearing, the top portion of the bearing (to the right) is what snaps into the plastic holder which should not be cracked.

So far you need a new lower bearing and bearing holder and more than likely a new "rag joint".

Too late. You should be able to just replace the bearing and the plastic retainer. Getting the bearing off the shaft was a problem. I had to cut mine off.
