I found a loose #4 body mount nut cage while I was removing my carpet for replacement - rear wheel well area. I've never had the need to remove / install a body mount bolt, but I don't want to create a future problem either.
I'm wondering if it's absolutely necessary to reinstall the nut cage. Looks like the 2 rivet heads are underneath the washer, so I'd be removing the bolt. Similar rivets (I've found a source to purchase) would be needed so the body mount bolt would go back in the same way. If I reinstall ... do I have any other options?
What if I don't reinstall it? Since it's suppose to keep the nut from turning when you turn the bolt (if it doesn't break off again), I'd have to pull back the carpet and get a wrench or socket on the nut to remove the bolt. Doesn't sound like a big deal ... am I overlooking something?
If you've dealt with this before, can you please head me in the right direction?
The cage is only there to keep the nut from spinning during assembly/removal. If the body mount is in good condition I wouldn't mess with it. Many people including myself that have replaced the #4 mounts just used a standard hex nut instead of replacing the cage...the only downside as you said is you'll need someone with a wrench on the inside to get the bolt out.
The cage will only break off agian if you try to remove the bolt anyway so why bother. It was only put there to hold the nut for the assembly line and is not there for strength.
