The owner has to know its not the real thing. He knows enough about the aftermarket companies in his description to know they sold thousands of these aftermarket Mako (Maco called by Motion) kits that I wouldn't really call it rare.
Give him credit though. The bids up fairly high for what amounts to a custom bodied 74 Vette.
The GM Mako has doors that would not fit the C3 body type. They hang over the rear fender.
However, the car up for auction really did come out nice. I'm not into customs but this car is pretty.
Its amazing that the auction ended at over 100K!! Its a great car but that price is nuts. And it didn't hit the reserve!!! Those glass kits are out there. And you can find them pretty cheap if you know where to look. They sold thousands of these kits. I have no doubt in my mind I could build that same car to the same level of quality from the ground up for maybe a 3rd of that price and power it with a big block. In fact I could pay someone to do it for maybe half the bid price. That car was very well put together from what the pics show at least. I am shocked. I think I discovered my next project.
True, but this repro looks much better IMO from a artistic standpoint. I think the use of a different style venting on the fenders that looks more like the gills of a shark, coupled with what look like longer and more pronounced flowing lines make it more Shark Like!
When I was young I used to love the Makos. Then I became the typical puritan and wanted only factory stock cars. And now I am starting to go back to my high school day mentality all over again so I am starting to like these. And after seeing this auction I would not mind finding one but I have to admit I never really was looking for a Mako but would see them here and there. There was one on here maybe over the winter and the seller was not asking for too much. Of course now I can't find it. I also saw some body parts at Carlisle '07. I didn't give them a second look.
Now that I am interested I am sure I will not see one so maybe I should amend my earlier statement................
6 months from now I will drag up this post and go on record to say I had no idea what the hell I was talking about and the kits are hard to find. Who knows. Maybe I'll get lucky.
after seeing the photos of the GM prototype here i went back to look. Funny, the glass side pipe covers are on this car, but the exhaust exits in the rear lol.
