Hi;
My slave cylinder was leaking so I bought a rebuilt unit from a vendor that I've had luck with before.
I replaced the cylinder and hoses, had the car jacked up and turned it from lock to lock. Didn't break any fingers as it did it's violent jerking. When things settled down, I disconnected the shaft on the cylinder and adjusted the control valve so the shaft stayed in a neutral position. Now their is no power steering. Occassionally it will try to swerve right or left and my arms are getting stronger. I drove it about 15 miles hoping it would purge any air out.
What have I missed?
Thanks, Dave
Are you sure the slave cylinder hoses are hooked up right? Mine didn't jerk at all, just extended all the way with the cylinder unhooked till I centered the valve.
Those hoses are supposed to cross when they come out of the valve.
I'll check the hoses tomorrow night when I get back in town. I thought they were a different size and the return hose used a clamp. Anyone have a diagram of pump to balaning valve and valve to cylinder?
Thanks
Maybe still some air in the system? When you bled it did you jack the front end up and turn the steering lock -to -lock ten or fifteen times with the engine off? It wasn't clear from your post how you bled the system. If you didn't do it that way, try that, and then try balancing the control valve again. With any luck that should do it. If you have the front end raised and the power steering ram already disconnected from the frame you can grab the rod and push it in and out ten or fifteen times and bleed it that way.

Thanks all, I'll post the results when I get it straightened out.I bled them per my Hanes manual section 10- 18 with the motor running. It is a 79 SB.
Do appreciate everyone's help, this is a great forum!

Bleed the system with the engine off, not running like the Haynes Manual says. With the engine running the PS Pump will whip the air and PS fluid into a foam and you'l have a difficult time getting all the air out. The piston rod on the power steering cylinder (ram) will force the air up and out of the system as you move it back and forth by turning the steering wheel; or by grabbing the piston rod and manually pushing it in and out if you have it disconnected from the frame.
