I have a 73 Corvette with a 454. When I went to remove the gas cap I found that I couldn't get it off. The cap does turn clockwise and snaps into place as it should and also turns counter clockwise, with proper up and down spring action but just won’t line up to come off. The car has 59k original miles on it, so is not driven much. I'm thinking that something on the bottom of the cap is not moving properly to allow it to line up and be removed. Anyone had this problem before or have an idea as to how to remove the cap, without actually having to cut it off? It is original equipment, not a locking cap.
Can you pull back the rubber and get at the bolts that hold the inlet in the tank?If you can remove all the bolts, remove the inlet and cap together turn it upside down and see whats holding it.
You don't have a non-vented gas cap on a 'vented' system, do you? If you don't start the car, can you take it on and off a couple of times without it sticking? If not, change the gas cap. If you can remove it [without restarting the car], get the proper gas cap for your car.
Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought of doing that but after pulling the lid off and pulling the boot back, I can halfway see the bolts. After figuring out the size I'll have to pick-up an offset wrench or socket to be able to get to them off. Appreciate the information...
Thanks for the reply but as stated the gas cap that is on there is original equipment, never replaced. I've tried removing it Hot, Cold and in between to no avail.
