It should be a muncie. My 78 has a muncie close ratio also. As far as the cost of the rebuild, I haven't priced it yet but that's about what I was expecting it to be. I'm thinking very seriously about just removing it and replacing it with a 5 or 6 speed. The gas mileage sucks with the 4 speed plus I just don't believe that it is the best thing for the engines to always rev so high on the highway.

I just rebuilt a Muncie from a friends camaro, we replaced the back up gear and bearings, Lets put it this way,,, I would rebuild them anytime for that price, If you have any mechanical nowhow you can do it yourself. the parts are not expensive.
I have spoken with a half dozen shops at this point... and a throw-out bearing seems to be the answer I get from most shops. (a whirling noise when the clutch pedal is NOT depressed) This, as I understand it, is a clutch issue and would not require a transmission rebuild.
So I guess I will start there first, as my local shop can replace the clutch.
Now, the only question is do I have a 10 spline or a 26? Anybody know how to figure that one out without opening it up?

The second site is the BW site where you can find the numbers. Vertical on the drivers side will give you the w number and additional info. I dont think anyone can give any answers since the trans might have been changed. Need to find out what is there. IMHO
A throw-out bearing is not a tough fix, if you have basic tools, are under cover and can get the car in the air a couple of feet. Drop the driveshaft, remove the tranny, change the bearing, reinstall.
I see what you're saying. I have never crawled under and looked at my tranny but have always assumed it was a muncie. Everywhere I looked on muncies it shows the same thing as the link you attached and it all stops after 74. After I bought my 78 I was deciphering the codes to see what it came with and below is what it showed as the standard and optional equipment, an M21 close ratio. I checked a couple of other years after 74 and they showed the same tranny listings.
So what does it have? I'll have to look when I get back home. I assumed that GM listed it with the M21 so therefore it was a Muncie. If your info is right, I guess they could have just left the M21 code for a 4sp. I did see a couple of sites that said GM dropped it from everything but the vette but there was nothing there to verify that on their site.
Now you're gonna make me get dirty to find out!
