Have any of you recently had your auto trans rebuilt? I am wondering how much i should expect to pay for a complete job, including removal, rebuild and installation for a 400 trans in SE Michigan. I just want a ball park figure so I don't get ripped off.
When I was looking into it for my truck it was about $1800.
For the Vette, I built my own 2004R with some help from in here and a book and Video off Ebay. Did the whole thing for about $900 including the hot rod parts. Didn't know a damn thing about Auto Trannys at the time. No expert on it now, but it worked.
The TH400 should be less for a rebuild than the 1800, but I have no idea about the competence of the shops up there
Have you priced a rebuilt unit from a local auto parts? That might give you a basis for the rebuilding and then you can just add in the R&R.I looked at AutoZone and the trans was 875.00.I would think that a local rebuilder would do the whole job for that.
You just need to call around to several 'reputable' tranny places/auto repair shops to get quotes. Many smaller shops will rebuild your tranny [instead of exchanging them] unless there are severe problems with it. Or, if you want an overdrive/lockup type replacement, now is the time to do so. 200R or 700R are good alternatives, but will take some 'mild' modifications to fit correctly. [That would be my choice, if car was not NCRS judged].
Just had my th 350 pulled out overthauled with transgo shift kit and reinstalled for $950. Tranny shop dude called today and asked how I liked the shift pattern. We will leave it alone for a few months and test before we adjust if needed.
