I've followed your development on the forum. You went through this about two years ago when you hit a crossroads. I think I told this to you before. Your in the wrong town. Get the hell out of there and go be with creative people. LA, Chicago, NY, or I hate to say it Vegas. There are companies looking for "out of the box thinkers". You might have to take a crap job to eat and pay rent, but a good one will find it's way to you.

Try a company in Dallas called Davaco, they have a pretty large retail client list. Paul is know for hiring creative people for branding, etc. They do a lot of retail rollouts and store designs.

get a job or 2 that pays the bills, I've been working two jobs since 1976. Be creative in your spare time.

Hey Bro...
Just collect your thoughts and set course on a new plan.
Have you tried:

http://www.coroflot.com/public/jobs_browse.asp

I'm a product designer and this where the majority of design based jobs are posted! You can search the different catagories. Check it out Bro!

Did you do any CNC-CADCAM milling or operation to make the pieces for those architectual models. If so, you might can get a entry level modelmaker position too.

You can get an exhibit design job for sure!

yeah, i check core77/coroflot every now and then.... actually posted a few times too...

i can setup cut sheets..... but just in autocad..... havent really messed with g-code for cnc..... but when i did contract work at exhibit works, i was an engineer and had to make the projects work..... basically had to take the fancy designer images and make them stand up...hahaha...then do production sheets and cut sheets...

as for model building, i have been doing professional models for about 10 years off/on

the only thing about cali is that people wont talk to you until you get there and knock on their door.....

i guess exhibit works got a big contract so i'm gonna call them monday

thanks

That's not just true about archies...i'm an EE, and with the auto downturn and Michigan not really diversifying years ago, it's a rough place for a LOT of professions...I was out of work for 6 mos, and when I opened up my job search to the rest of the country, a LOT of other industries opened up. I eventually moved to indiana for work, just a week ago. I'm still in transportation, but not auto. 18-wheelers, RV's, etc. Places in Cali were looking for public transportation, and I got calls from seattle and ohio for construction, construction equipment, etc. In michigan, ALL engineers are sorta pigeonholed into being automotive engineers.

I'd been told too, look elsewhere. And it helped.

Good luck with everything.

UPDATE:

so i got a place to crash for a few months in l.a. a friend of mine is letting me stay at her place...... dont know what that all entails but i'm sure it'll be fun

i contacted a few firms in l.a. but they wont really talk to you until you get to cali....so i'm just getting a list together for that.......

i'm prolly just gonna take a plane ride and a large duffle bag and carry on and get out there....then find something and see whats up...... i'm not really up to do a full cross country move and all that..... maybe sell my truck or give it to my brother and store the vette...... or just hand the keys to my dad and tell him to make sure it gets moved around the block a few times.....

figured i'd keep the family here informed..... since everyone knows the seafoam green vette with big rims...hahahaha

Hey man,
Great work, but you need to position yourself very clearly. From your portfolio, you come across as a part model maker, part industrial designer and part environments designer. Although all these 3 areas are related, you need to clearly state your strengths.

The design area is too specialized that people would doubt your skills if you come across as someone who does a little bit of everything.

You are really talented. Positon yourself right and contact either frog design or ideo directly. These firms rearely pass on good talent.

Please take my candid opinion constructively. I have taken the art/fine art path before I landed in full time sw design.

thanks for the ideas

i was gun ho in the beginning of my adventures when i was 23.... i wanted to make things happen..... so i just did everything i could...... from design/construction to running the college woodshop when i was just 23...crazy...

but i'm now focusing on being a designer/exhibit engineer or working for an arch. firm doing construction documents and possible design.....

unfortunately i dont have all the computer programming knowledge to get into product design..... need to know programs like alias/viz/sketchup/etc.... i'd rather build the form and feel/touch/shape as i please

one day.... i'll have my clothing line really going and my furniture line happening...... but looking for some stable work to get the funds going....

Your thread got me thinking... I was out of work for a while, struggling, so I got to looking around and thinking. i see all these homes, with people in them living pretty good lives, and I say to my self, what are they doing that I'm not? I mean, they aren't smarter then me, they don't work harder then me, what was I doing wrong? ie- why was I flat broke at 38 w/o a job? what struck me, was that what these people do, is they get a job with a stable company, and they stay there. Year after year, they gain seniority and experience, while they have a ever increasing income, or at least a good, stable one, and they just show up to work at the same place, every day. nothing special required, and before too long, they are in charge of a department and well respected, buying a house, living the American dream, everyday.I encourage every young person top go ahead and shoot for the stars, but if it doesn't happed, It's time to get behind the wheel barrow. I now, 4 years later own a newish truck, a 'Vette, and am about to buy a house. It works. And in your spare time, guess what? you get to do what you want- prioritize, first things first. C.

b.

You have talents, man. You have a bruised desire from lack of opportunity in your current neighborhood. Don't let it keep you down; getting out to the coast has got to do wonders for regenerating the fire.

Whatever tools you haven't had experience with, well, let's all hope something breaks open at the right time and without compromising your integrity, you get a chance to apply your enthusiasm to the job. You'll learn if given a chance. We're all pulling for you to find your way.

Like Rob Schneider the actor and SNL alumni says: "YOU can DO THIS!"

That is kind of where I am now. My problem is that I get bored at work and start dreaming of being my own boss again. That's when the "why me", "why not me", "I can do better" voices start. Finacially we make ends meet but when you know that owning your own business can mean a much better financial future and a more rewarding career it is hard to accept the steady as she goes job.

Take the job but keep working toward your dream. I know I am and just to show you how things get started here is the latest in my story.

I was buying some body filler and bonding adhesive when the store owner and I started talking about business and how often people with a talent lack the business and organizational skills to run it successfully. He told me he knew about a very successful body shop in the area in which the owner is stressed out and ready to retire. I asked him to mention me to him and I sent him a link to my bio on our co. website just to lend a bit of credibility. A couple days later my phone rang and it was the owner asking if I wanted to buy a body shop. After talking with him we have agreed to meet and see where it leads. The moral of this story is to not pass up an opportunity to honk your own horn.

Good luck.

update:

been digging through some older projects i did in college to hopefully showcase some "architecture/design" on my website.....

i did a little website cleaning and deleted/merged some catagories and trying to get the site looking a bit refined......

so the new "design" catagory has a few projects that i did a while back..... figured this is the only design/drawing/building scale stuff i did and hopefully it'll show that i know something........

portfolio

any criticism would help.... not sure if the designs look too basic...but i wanted to keep a simple look to go along with the site/etc...

Hi b,

You've invited constructive feedback on your work. I hope my comments therefore won't offend.

I find the navigation on your site very confusing. The homepage has a menu on the left and two buttons on the right. If I click any of those links the whole page layout changes and I'm not 100% sure where I am any more nor how to reach other sections listed in the homepage menu. (The links that were on the left seem to be in various places in the alternative layout.) I would prefer to see a single, context-sensitive menu in the same place on every page that shows me which section I'm viewing at any time.

Some other feedback about the homepage (main) menu:
- If I click the 'Contract Design' link, I'm looking at a page with no content.
- If I click 'Sculptures' I see an empty page with the title DELETE in the bottom-left corner.
- If I click 'Exhibit/Display Design' I see some images of... things (not sure what! ) but the heading in the bottom left corner says IN/OUT.

Perhaps the site's a work-in-progress. Perhaps this is part of the deconstructed urban design. Perhaps it's just me, and I'm sure it's intuitive to you, but I'm a random visitor and I thought I'd mention this in case you're interested.
