The heater control is coming loose (slowly) and dropping down on the right side. I can take the ash tray out and reach under to push it up but not long term fix. Do I need to take the console around the shifter out to fix this? If so, any tips. Thanks for any help.

The HVAC control panel is held up to the shifter bezel by some small hex screws. Yours may be backing out, or the holes are stripped and not holding the screws.
The easiest way to get to them is to remove the shifter bezel and look into why the screws are loosening.
Here's what it looks like under there.

Hey Alan, the original poster actually has a '78, which has a different shifter bezel and different HVAC controls. I don't have a pic of mine but someone might.
The hot and cold temp cable is most likely pulling it down.Try repositioning the cable a little but not to much you can break it where the cable goes in.After repositioning the cable put a temporary block of some kind under the AC control until it reforms and pulls back up tight against console.
