No, they are not loose-it is not a rattle. The design creates a ping sound at idle. Only noticable if you listen for it.

They sound their best at higher RPM.

I will say they breath very well.
That is what I hear also at idle. Now mine are just under 3 feet long with no center cap so they are loud. As I have made my own stainless baffles i tried different designs. the first were a true spiral and those were really tinny sounding so i made them the same as the ones being sold and used by you and others. The problem is no one mentions the tinny sound when posting on these pages. To me the glass pack inserts sound the best with a 350 with a nice idle and a deep sound over all, but more restrictive than the spiral baffles.

No. I left the center plug in place as it was delivered.
I was concerned they would be too loud if drilled and also not provide enough back pressure. I'm only about 350-400 HP, so from what I've read on here and on the STS website, there was no real need to drill in my HP range. They flow real well as is.

What's the diameter of the center tube/plug? 7/8? maybe 1 inch? I already went from 2 1/4 pipe to a 4 inch side pipe minus the center plug, so probably a good 3 inch flow.

Drilling the center will definately make them louder, as you're opening a straight through tube, but I did not want to go deaf. With the plugs in place, I can still hear the radio fine and have a conversation in the cockpit. Also don't have the droan and resonation that I had with the Flowmasters.

I had true dual 2 1/4 inch out the rear with Flowmaster 2 chamber and high flow cats before and these spirals are quieter than the old system.
I'm happy with it.

If I could change anything it would be to have a more throaty, muffled, deep idle. If you want the perfect sound at idle, more backpressure with the possibility of burning out every couple years, go with the Hooker inserts. If you want a decent sound at idle and a throaty roar on acceleration and cruise, with great flow, and no chance of rotting out, go with the spiral baffles! They are nice heavy quality. Galvanized Steel. They fit snug. Welds are nice. Hardware is good stainless.

Only installation snafu I had was one of the mounting bolts for the STS inserts lined up exactly with one of the Steelshield clamps. But only on one side??? Must have been my layout? Other side fit fine.

I love my sweet thunder inserts, they arent loud enough to make any neighbors mad, but if I havent stomped on it for a whyle, it will still supprise me (and sometimes startel me) when I mash it

I looked at the STB but it was a bit outta my price range for the time when I was buying

Great description and spot on subject. I may block off the center tube on mine to see the difference in sound.
