Default custom center consol

Well i decided that i would try making one to avoid the cost of buying all the stuff to replace the originals. Hers what i came up with, not the best but im happy with it. Total cost to build was 0$ so i can’t complain. I wrapped it with the extra strip of carpet that came with the carpet set i got from Wilcox a while back because i didn’t want to paint it. I have a c6 shifter boot and a parking break boot and they way.

I'll simply say I respect your creativity, and severe low cost for the upgrade. I hope, assuming I am correct as to how some people will react, that you can take criticism in stride.

If you don't mind me asking, how did it all look before, and do you have some pics of it?

ooooohh, you're brave. Like DB said, appreciate the creativity, but it may end up looking very tacky. I'll be interested to see the end result.

what about cutting it were the ebrake section meets the console section to get rid of the wrinkles. what's going to happen with all of the ac/heat controls and lighter/ashtray?

No offense meant, but I firmly believe you can scour a swap meet and find a couple console top pieces, no matter how worn, for next to no money, and it will probably look a bit better than this. If you really look through the boxes I guarantee you will find $5 pieces that will work for you.

All you need is some sheets of aluminium and wrinkle paint and you can make your own custom stuff:

This is how I did it, it's an old pic. I dont have a pic of the finished peice yet but it's all custom. Including the warning lights (I made my own warning symbols on transparent sheet and used colored lights behind them)

My original pieces were in poor shape so I painted the center console flat black and I stole my brothers old 82 shifter plate and cut that up

That looks good but it needs a little carpet on top.

I think it's ok from the transition point between the shifter / P-brake back. The carpeted shifter area is kinda 70's van-ish

at least you tried and shared your efforts

Don't think that is a direct "Fit" replacement for the 81, but then again you can shoe horn anything into place. The 81 center console is NOT that expensive. I'd sell you my old one (swapped out the center console plus gage console with new replacements). But I'm a pack rat and I keep all original parts I pull off my 81 - sorry

ok 1 last attempt to salvage it,

i cut some sheet metal to go over the part that "looks 70's van ish"

i need help with what color i should paint it?, see 2nd pic and please give your opinion.

im going to take the 4 speed shifter out and not cut a hole in the sheet metal yet and buy (see pics 3 and 4) to sit on top of it.

ill post up the result tomorrow when its painted

i want to thank you guys for your honest opinions.
