My gauge always reads less then what I have. I tend to check it by looking in the tank.

On both of the '71's, when the gauge reads E, I have only a gallon or so left in the tank. If you look inside the fuel tank, the sock screen just barely has gasoline touching it.

I guess that would be caused by the fuel sloshing around under acceleration and deceleration. My fuel gauge wobbles all over the place after about the half full point.

In the city, or if I drive with a lead foot, I'll get a massive 7 mpg.

I don't usually let it get to E and I've never let it run completely out of gas because I don't want to suck sludge. My recent experience was caused by being on a spontaneous cruise into unfamiliar territory that was curiosly devoid of gas stations.

Do you have a charcoal cannister behind left front wheel?

NA9 would also have a heat shield between the intake and q-jet.
None of that original polution stuff remains.

It's been quite extensively modified over the years by the previous owner. Apart from being converted to RHD, the engine was taken very close to the original (unreleased) LS-7 specs by using over the counter GM parts. When unleaded arrived it was tamed down but bored out to 468. It's currently running a Holley 4 bbl. It's the most politically incorrect, environmentally unfriendly gas burner in Sydney. I love it and Caltex loves me!

my 79 has a 20 gallon tank ? At $1.37 / liter ( for bronze gas) and a 90.8 liter tank - thats $124 to fill the tank ! I'm only gonna let it get down to 1/2 tank before I fill. I can't afford to fill it from empty !

At last fill I paid $1.77 a litre for premium unleaded (98ron).

At tonight's currency exchange rate that's the equivalent of US$7.00 per US gallon.

Actually, with its angry cam, it's a bit of a bitch to drive around town. I much prefer it on the highway where I can get better than 14 mpg on a good run.
