What are your options if a vette/car/motorcycle doesn't have a title?
Whether the previous owner never had or just lost the title.
You obviously need a title to register the car/bike in New Jersey to drive on the public roads.
Anyone know of any round about ways to get a title, even if its to get the car/bike titled in another state and then transfered to a new jersey title?
What are my options?
My 68 vette had a Georgia title which I was able to get inspected by a police officer in georgia then the NJ dmv issued me a NJ title. But what if I have no title?
Can you still contact the previous owner? Depending on laws in your state he could file for a lost title and then sign it over to you. If you have a bill of sale or something similar, NJ might let you file for a lost title.
Every state is different, some states do not require titles for vehichles past a certain age, some are very tough. You can get a correct year title for anything in Georgia, and I do mean anything. A title co. will want a few hundred bucks. Do a google search on Georgia titles, get some info and make cpl phone calls. I think it costs $8 and you need to know a Georgia resident. Some counties in Ohio do not accept Georgia titles...how the heck can they do that?

...a vehicle i am interested in was purchased at a police auction without a title...
I am sure you realize this car was stolen and recovered or seized by the police. In either situation, not having a title will give you headaches. If the car was stolen, the owner's insurance company could have a legal claim to the vehicle. If the vehicle was seized as the result of illegal activity and if the owner is now in the lock up, don't expect him/her to be signing over clear title to the car.
Unless you know the legal hoopla for clearing the title, I would walk away from this one.
A police auction car should have come with paperwork to get a good title. That is the best place to buy a car like that because you should have no problems getting a title. I have bought several cars like that, but never gone through the whole deal, always cut them up and sold the rest for scrap. Push the buyer for more details.
It seems to me that for the cops to "legally" auction or sell the car they would first need to have legal claim to it no matter what the circumstances were that they got the car. Other wise they would be selling/auctioning something they didnt have legal claim to . Peace,,,Moosie
i just walked into the dmv with a vin number, and walked out about 90mins later with a title for a 77 vette. i had no bill of sale or anything, just a vin.
