Was going to participate in our July 1st Canada Day parade.
Took the car out for a drive the day before and drove for a good 45 mins . It ran beautifully. Parked it on the driveway to let it cool down before putting it in the garage. While waiting I was having a beer with my wife outside talking with the kids on who was going to sit where for the parade. The kids were so excited.
As I was taking in a gulp of cold beer admiring how beautiful our red convertible is and I heard a dripping / splashing sound coming from under the engine compartment. It was free flowing prestone !
It turns out the water outlet housing for the thermostat decided to crack right then and there! It is a small hair line crack around the flange area which let ooze a out sufficient quantity of anti-freeze.
I had a mechanic close by who works out of his house and pass me an identical housing that he had from a 72 SB (L48) he was working on.
Bolted it on with a fresh gasket... I could not believe my eyes , it started to leak too from a visible crack around a flange area.
No parade and disappointed kids. Told them next year for sure.
I am now looking for another housing but seem to be a difficult piece to find around here.
If any body has one and is willing to let it go PM me.
That was what I was thinking too.
Clearly the powers to be did not want the car in the parade.
I am kind of glad in a way becasue I did not realise how slow they go...I would have been riding the clutch for over 2 hrs and it was a hot day.
Try:
1) GM dealer. Some are listed in the Performance Parts catalogue.
2) Canadian Tire. Again the Performance parts catalogue.
3) Your local speed shop.
4) Corvette people at NCRS Quebec
I already checked out the GM dealer....none to be had.
I am looking for a similar piece to the original.
Do you think the high performance shops would have ?
I was assumming they would have a generic chromed housing with a sensor port on it.
Just went to Canadian Tire no luck.
Looks like I have to wait for Paragon order to come in.
myk7 ..that is an awsome deal...we don't have Oreilly's around here.
Are you sure it was the water outlet housing you got for $6. Sounds more like you got a thermostat for that price.
My thought was that you could just drop on a Mr. Gasket/Moroso unit until Paragon came through. They don't have provision for a thermal vacuum switch but that is not needed during the summer. Given the rain this summer (at least here in Ottawa) and the short Canadian driving season, Corvette time is precious.
That is funny ...Mr. Gasket/Moroso never had heard of that one.
I was thinking the same. I did not expected this simple part to be as hard to get.
I was thinking maybe temporarily going the "Bubba" route and trying a bit of JB Weld on and around the hairline crack on the outside of the housing????
Should even try or am I wasting my time.
JB Weld has helped my out quite a bit with my trail bike.
Repaired a leaking crack in the crank cankcase.

I was in Montreal this week for the International Jazz Festival.
Just got back today.
Strange thing is, on Tuesday morning we were walking downtown near Rue University and Blvd Rene-Levesque I think.
I called my woman's attention to a beautiful Red chrome bumper vert with the top down that was traveling west toward where there were Canada Day festivities still going on downtown around noon or so.
If that wasn't your vert, then you have a twin in greater Montreal somewhere.
