Default Timing Question

We have new everything in engine (1976, 350 Auto) and just turned the key a few nights ago. It wasn't cranking over, so we turned our HEI distributor 180 degrees and she fired right up. We can't seem to locate the timing mark when it's running. Any suggestions? Thanks

put a chalk mark on the timing mark. It will show up with your light.

Waht do you mean by its not coming up where it should? Are you rotating the distributor to align the marks AND is the vacuum advance hose disconnected and plugged? Are you using the original damper and timing cover? Also is your timing light pickup attached to the #1 plug wire, most forward on the drivers side?

We found the timing mark was way advanced and brought it back by hand as much as possible. We got it to read plus 13 on the metal guage attached to the timing cover. We did forget to plug the vaccum advance hose and yes we are on the number 1 piston. We think we are a tooth off and will remove and rotate the distributor one tooth. This is the proper procedure right? Thanks for the help

Remove distributor and install it so you have some room to adjust it. You may have to turn the oil pump shaft with a long screwdriver to install the distributor where it needs to be.
