I've got a 70 454 that's like driving in an oven. I've seen heat shields that go under the carpet and plan to purchase and install one soon (any suggestions on which work best?).
I was wondering if anyone has any other ideas/suggestions to block the heat? Appreciate any help.
Several areas to look at before you pull your carpet.
1. Check to make sure all the rubber grommets are in place on your firewall. This can be a major source of hot air.
2. Install a valve in your heater hose to cut off hot water circulating to the core.
3. There is a foam collar and insulation in the transmission tunnel. If they are missing heat comes up through the shifter console.
4. Weatherstrip on the rear edge of the hood. If it is missing or in poor condition allows hot engine air to be pulled in through your fresh air vents.
Maybe putting some insulation around the exhaust pipes that go along side the transmission would help also.
I was surprised to look under my 70 to see that the driver's and passenger's side fiberglass floor pans are exposed with no insulation. On my 68, and I think on 69's also, there's a fiberglass blanket under the pans and the blanket is in turn protected from road debris by a steel shield. The blanket covers the floor pans and it extends up into the transmission tunnel to mate with the transmission tunnel insulation shroud. I'm thinking about adding this 68/69 blanket feature to my 70. It looks like the front shield mounts are present already and to install the rear mounts involves drilling small holes in the transmission crossmounts and using easy to install aluminum rivets to secure the rear of the shield. The 68/69 fiberglass blankets are not expensive to buy.
So my 68, covered from with insulation on the bottom from the transmission crossmember forward, and with the transmission tunnel completely covered with insulation - the blanket and shroud- and the blanket covering up the lower half of the engine firewall...results in a lot of insulation. (I've got that foam transmission horseshoe insulation piece also). I think all of this insulation duplicates just what came from the factory. My cabin runs very cool. Also, I don't get that gas petal hot foot from the exhaust pipes - I've the factory 69 sidepipes. Having sidepipes also helps keep heat out of the cabin.
man, that is the fun of owning a big block.. roasting in the front seat.. I kind of enjoy it and brag about it!
The wife says "turn the heater off!",
i just smile....
I put Dynamat Extreme under the carpet and put new seals in the heater box and it made a huge difference on my BB '70. The foam collar on top of the gear box is another must have.
