Default Overheating! Help!

I have a 79 and she performs well, or use to. I have a heater core leak and when it would leak it would fog up my inner windshield. So to remedy this because im poor, I took off the hoses to the core and from the core. Then I used an intermediat hose from the water pump back into the intake. and filled it back up with antifreeze that leaked out.

I thought this was a quick remedy right? NOPE. Now whenever I drive, she overheats very quickly. So quickly that i cant drive it!!!

Why is it doing this? I cant figure it out!!!!

You may still have a vapour lock "or an air pocket in the system" , start the eng, and carefully loosen a hose clamp and let it "burp out" while the car is warming up it may take a few minutes. Your car should be able to run fine with no core, Ron

I wouldn't think bypassing the heater core would cause enough air to get in and not be pushed fully out. Generally its air trapped under your thermostat that will cause it not to open and overheat.

Do you have the electric radiator fans?

Stay away from the Dex-Cool antifreeze, that can cause major problems w/ any air in the system, expecially if you overheat, it did a number on my truck radiator in a very short time (20 miles). I believe most of the Prestones are Dex clones but just as many say they haven't had problems with it.
Simple green is the way to go and change yearly or so.

If your overheating out somewhere, leave off the rad cap and drive it back , watching that temp gauge.
A new thermostat might be worth a try also.

I think I read here that the best way to remove air was to put the pass. front tire on a ramp (to get the rad. cap higher than the motor)

I had a similar problem which turned out to be an air pocket. I finally resorted to draining some of the coolant so I could get the thermostat goosneck off then jacking up the front end pretty high and filling the block with coolant. Then drilled a small hole in the stat, reinstalled the stat and goosneck and filled the radiator making sure the top hose was full then let the car down and top off the radiator.

This seemed to work for me, I was having a bitch of a time with it before this.

Thanks for the replies! What I ended up doing was exactly what you said! I took the front passenger wheel up and sqeezed the radiator hoses untill my radiator actually burped!

I did have vapor lock in the system. Wow, I was getting frustrated. but glad that the corvetteforums saved the day again!

You guys rock! Thank You!!!!!!

Good point on drilling the small hole in the stat. Have done it for years to make it a lot easier to fill a empty system. Some of the manufacturers are finally putting a vent hole in them.

Buy a stat with a hole already drilled.
