Default Temp gauge problem

Hello to all the forum members. I have a 70 350 350 and my temp gauge started going crazy. Motor will run around 200 -220 and then the temp gauge will peg 250+. Is this a short, temp gauge or sender unit problem? I checked the wire to the sender unit and it is attached and tight on the post. I just got the car back on the road after a long rear suspension project started over the winter.

Many Thanks
Jeff

Was the radiator flushed and filled during the work? May have a air pocket
Might also need a new thermostat.
I'd check those first.

If you have an ohm meter hook it up to the sending unit and run the engine and watch your readings.I'll edit in some numbers for you to go by in a min.
220 degrees = 70 ohms
200 degrees = 90 ohms
180 degrees = 115 ohms
160 degrees = 140 ohms
120 degrees = 250 ohms
100 degrees = 340 ohms

I gave up with my stock electric temp. meter. I hooked a mechanical one from autometer, its far more accurate and will show the temp. changes almost instantly.

Either the temp sender is bad [shorted out] or you have a short to ground in the temp gauge signal wire.

Thanks for the advice. Had a friend check out the sending unit and it appears bad. I just ordered a new sending unit from Paragon.
