Default Installing luggage rack

Has anypone here installed their own luggage rack? I am looking at purchasing an 8 hole rack with pins so I can carry my tops. My stereo equipment has rendered my cargo space too small.
I realize that placement is an issue for the fuel lid, but other than measuring multiple times to be sure, is there any issues that I need to be aware of? DO I have to drop the fuel tank or anything? Will my tops fly off in the wind?

Thanks
Bill

What year car are you talking about?

Consider not installing the luggage rack. Lots of people (myself included) won't consider buying a car with a luggage rack on it.

Look into one of those canvas T-Top covers and leave the T-Tops at home when not needed.

OK, having said that, I believe that the 1977 Corvette AIM has a set of instructions for installing the luggage rack, as it was an option from the factory in 1977.

I like the Astro top myself, easy to take off etc etc....
OK thats enough of stealing your thread, sorry....

the top carrier should come with a small outline or guide for where on the back deck to mark your holes,,,, or use the assembly manual (maybe?)

or, just set it up on the back and get a pencil and trace where you want it.

drill your holes,
insert the rubber expansion pieces
set the rack
insert your screws and tighten down......not killer, just good and snug

tops stay on it just fine when lashed.

hope this helps

AIM will show only the V54 roof carrier installation since these were done at the factory. Regular luggage rack was a dealer installed option and will not be in the AIM.

[QUOTE=emccomas;1566480852]What year car are you talking about?

Its a 76. I have a Fox Raincoat for the car now. Its OK but unsuitable for a long trip or an overnighter where the car would have to be locked up.

"drill your holes,

Does this mean that everything is done from the top? I dont have to get underneath to access nuts that are unaccessiible?

Nope, you don't have to get under the car. Just take it slow, make sure you drill just thru the fiberglass, put the plugs in, screw down the rack & you're done.

Use a step drill so you don't end up with 8 holes in your tank
