will not be able to find that info. look at trim tag on door pillar for color, interior, etc. motor stamps will help some.

Only option to be decoded from a 72-up VIN, is the engine option and in your case, the base L48.

btw, double check your VIN. For 78, it should be more like 1Z87L8S402624.

So he forgot to type an "8"...give the guy a break. Your VIN will not tell you about options or color from the factory. However, since it is a 78, you can contact the Corvette factory (or museum) in Bowling Green, KY and get your option/color info from them.

You need to contact this place, get the form to complete, and mail in with $50. As stated trim tag gives color and interior.

And they will send you this:

Here is some additional data to help you.

For Corvettes sold in the US:

The General Motors Dealer Invoice service is managed by Allied Vaughn, a tier one supplier of GM. For copies of a GM vehicle invoice, please email the Request for Vehicle Invoice form to vehicleinvoice@gmmediaarchive.com. As of March 1, 2005 the cost for this service is $50.00 per invoice. If paying by credit card, your account will be charged within two business days of fulfillment. Fulfillment is expected to take 2 to 3 weeks. If paying by check or money order, please mail your check or money order and a copy of this form to:

Attention: GM Vehicle Invoice
Allied Vaughn
11923 Brookfield
Livonia, MI. 48150

You can fill out the form online and print it out, send it, or using a credit card you can fill it out and submit it online.

Another article worth reading for you would be the one at the Corvette Action Center. Here is the link to assist you.
http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...ildsheets.html
Just cut and paste it in your browser and enjoy.
Good hunting.

By the way, it took about 4 weeks for me to get my build sheet after it was ordered. FYI.

Does anyone know the years and GM makes for which Allied Vaughn has invoices available? I know the pre-77 Oldsmobile records are supposedly destroyed, but it would be nice to see what I could get for my '74 Vette, '72 Chevy truck and some others. Thanks.

Yes. The form says, and I quote:

Chevrolet since 1977
Pontiac since 1987
Cadillac since 1980
Oldsmobile since 1977
BMC since 1976

Good luck hunting.

Did you notice no a/c

One way I can tell the compartment temp during the summer is to look at my water temp and divide by 2.

Thanks David. I guess that just about confirms the loss of the pre-77 records!

It's more than a 8. It's not the correct order for a 78, including the L or 4 that determines the engine. His original question has been answered, so he should be fine.

But you should be okay getting that '78 Corvette data you were seeking from the build sheet. I found my build sheet to be fascinating because it allows you to exactly tell what the car has been through from "new to now". I am awaiting the second build sheet for my second '77. Great records.
Enjoy the search.

Here is the build sheet from my 1977 Red (was Corvette Orange) I received this spring. Great detail. I see it came with a Stereo Tape and AM/FM radio combo that is long gone now. It was shipped to White Sulphur Springs to a dealer that I have tried to contact without success to see if they have any of the original sales data. No response. If any of you are in the White Sulphur Springs WV area and have any inside on a dealer named C.W. Lewis or Lewis Chevrolet I'd appreciate any assistance.

Thanks to all and good hunting.
