My '76 needed a tune up some weeks ago - the symptoms were that she 'coughed' along, and there were pops in the exhaust, she generally drove like she still needed to warm up on a freezing day. However this was during a hot period, and I had let her run for a good 10 mins. So I took her into the garage and had her carb cleaned, which seemed to do the trick. She was driving like a dream again.
My question, if anyone can answer, is why would these symptoms have returned? She is coughing and spluttering again. Before I spend £200 transporting her to the garage are there any simple things to check first?
Does this happen when its wet or under high humidity conditions? If so you might need new spark plug wires, spark plugs or distro cap. If fuel is making it through your engine unburned, it may be an electrical issue... (this happened to me on another car)
Mine was sputtering & spitting and my problem turned out to be the battery had A bad Cell. Put in New Die Hard No no popping no missing and starts every time.Just A thought.
It has been quite humid here in London the past few weeks yes, so maybe this has had something to do with it. I had heard that this kind of 'sputtering' sometimes points to a loose spark plug cable?Unfortunately on a '76 they're right underneath...
I was surprised that when I first took her in, the garage managed to cure the problem by giving her carb a good clean and a tune up, but now i half suspect something must have come loose. She only started playing up again about a week ago, and she's been fine since i got her back from the garage (and fine in the four years i have owned her!)
