Default Find the 1968 Corvette

By the vin, a very early 1968 convertible, car #2101...

The 81 may have an interesting past...

Default Where's Waldo????

Other than the VIN, what exactly is 68?????

How do you get a 68 vin attached to a 81 body???? Some illeagalities I'm sure.

Car looked ok though until I saw the picture of the frame.

If not for the VIN I would say it's a typo and should be a "78" and that rot hole in the frame!!!! As stated earlier "Run Forrest Run"

i find it amazing e-bay don't worry about pulling ads like this fishy case. but if you put a word like camaro or porsche in your corvette ads description, it will be yanked in a heartbeat.

I saw that one while looking on ebay using "1968 Corvette" as my search terms and wondered what the heck is this person thinking/trying to pull? That's a lot of work to make a 68 look like that right down to the late style dash.

What did P.T.Barnum say about a sucker?

I've heard stories about people who find completely wrecked Corvettes, like say a '68, and taking the VIN plate out of the windshield pillar. They then install this VIN plate on a stolen car, that may or may not be the same year as the car that was wrecked. Then, they title this stolen car as if it was the wrecked car because no one ever checks if the car they wrecked got re-registered anywhere.

So now, what do I think is more likely, that someone went to an immense amount of effort to make a '68 look like an '81 (which would more than likely lower its value substantially), or someone pulled something like the above to turn something essentially worthless into a "titled asset"?

One of a kind. A collector car. 10 years before its time. Wow.

With all the work involved, it's a money loser for the seller even at the BIN. Definately a pre 80 frame looking at the rear susp. Be a cool car for 5k assuming you could register it and not get arrested. /:\

At least the seller does really a good job in providing sufficient amount of visual information about the car. Pictures and videos show a lot of details for the potential buyer. Not like some of 3-exterior-shot and "L@@K, MOTION TRIBUTE, MUST HAVE, STUNNING" comment-stuffed ads.

The rest of the story is caveat emptor - buyer beware.

Actually they will. Look at the bottom of any ad. There is a "report this item" tab. Click it and report it.
I have and they have pulled the ad.
Ebay counts on the public to help police it. They cannot possibly screen all ads.

Pulled the VIN off of a 68 and put it on the later model, whatever year it is. This way, in Cali it bypasses the smog police.

Not the case here. The rear suspension is '68-79 or somewhere in between (no batwing crossmember and Dana). Body is '80 and up. It is a mix of two cars. Why? Would like to know the whole story though.

'80 body on an older frame. Worse thing is he had to "transfer" the VIN id plate to the new body to make it look somewhat legit. This is where the legality issues come in.
Old body was probably wrecked or rusted.
Found a new donor body and bolted it on the old frame.
So far not so bad.
Put old VIN on new body-not good. Jail time.
Why do this? My guess is newer body probably hot.

in the case of building a hot rod, such as a 23 T, bills of sale for componetes must be produced to title the car. taking a wrecked 68,match a 80 with a bad frame, motorless, whatever, combine the two..with bills of sale and /or titles to both cars...maybe, just maybe,he can get away with it.

Really? I just used the link and went right to the ad, which continues to run.

What exactly needs to be "policed" here? I remember tons of cars in the 70s & 80s with full Can Am kits, Maco bodies (he says this, he doesnt know what it is), Eckler wagons, convertible conversions, etc... as well as cars with fully updated noses and tails and interiors.

If whoever, took a junked 80-81, put the body on (did you see the flared wheel wells? Custom work here) and installed the interior, it would not be the most custom Corvette Ive seen all week.

Im not understanding all the overreaction talk about illegal VIN plates, etc. What am I missing?

I think if someone made the accusation to ebay that this ad was fraudulent, they would be out of line based on what I see.

PS- Bman- I was a 100% feedback since 1997 until they changed the rules. I am not happy with those guys!
