Not to start another dino vs. synthetic oil debate, but for those of us that want to use synthetic, Shell's synthetic looks like a good and affordable alternative. Here's a quote from a thread discussing the ZDDP levels of the new synthetic:
"It sure does. The 5W-40 synthetic has something in the neighborhood of 1400ppm of Zinc with 1100ppm of Phosphorus ... those are the two components in ZDDP.
The newer CJ-4 rated 15W-40 conventional has lower ZDDP -- around 1200ppm Zinc and around 900ppm+ of Phosphorus. But don't let the raw numbers fool you ... the new stuff is terrific. I've run it in my Goldwing and the wear metal numbers keep going down and down."

I believe that this formulation was designed for diesel engines, particularly pre-2007 engines that were designed before the ultra-low sulfur fuels went into effect. The lower sulfur content in the fuels cut down significantly on the lubricity offered by the fuel itself. The additional additives in the newer oil formulations help to offset the changes made to the fuel. If it work on our early Corvettes too, great!
