I am going back to an original GM A/M F/M stereo radio on my 77. Someone gave me a good set of 4X6 Kenwood speakers which are 4 ohm. I was told that factory speakers were 8 ohm. I hooked them up temporarly today and they sound alright at lower to mid range volumes but when I crank them up high they sound kind of distorted. Is this just normal for A 77 factory radio or because the speakers are wrong? Is there anyway to place a resister in series with these speakers to make them 8 ohm or should I just buy the proper speakers?

Just get the right speakers. Running the 4 ohm ones will burn out the power stage of the factory radio pretty quick, if you turn it up. Putting in a 4-6 ohm resistor you'll loose 1/2 your volume, and would have to go with prety big power resistors anyway. Get new ones.

im not sure if i have stock speackers or not, but i did originally have to 8-track player in mine.. when i cranked it up, it sounded like crap. put in a pioneer and viola! sounds great.. if you interested in keeping the old one, you might look at having it refurbished.. though the speakers are probably part of the problem as well...

When I got the car it already had an aftermarket speakers and radio. I am trying to go back to the original radio. I found some 10 ohm speakers on the internet I am going to call them tomorow to see if they will work.
