Default 1970 Headlight Opening Problems

Hello,

Need some help from anyone who has experience with these headlights on a 1970.

One of my headlights will not lock all of the way open. This causes it to bounce and not trigger the headlamp warning switch. I can lock it by had but it takes a fair amount of effort to both do this and undo this. The vacuum pots operate fine, something just seems out of adjustment at that end of the lever stroke.

Is there and adjustment on these headlight mechs for this lock process?

Thanks

WIth the light open, disconnect and try turning the push rod from the actuator so it's longer and pushes the connecting link further forward. Once it's in the correct position reinstall the cotter pin.

If you mean you can lock it with your hand but its really hard then I would think the up stop needs to be backed off after you try what GD70 said.

I disconnected the actuator and it is still very hard to lock and un-lock the assembly. Is the up-stop located on the outer part of the swing arm or is it somewhere else? I feel what seems to be a threaded pad up there. I know the downstop is a bolt right behind the electric switch assembly for the warning light.

Thanks

The "J bar" is bolted to the headlamp door on the outboard side. There's a bolt with a rubber bumper. Try screwing it down so it's lower allowing the housing to raise more. When you're under the car looking up you should be able to see if it's hitting the support assembly.

If your talking about the screw in the locking mech. thats a limit screw that adjusts the height of the bucket in the down position. The one I think might be your problem is on the end of the outside arm towards the fender.Look up inside its a seperate arm.But make sure as GD70 said you have enough stroke from the actuator.Be careful when trying to adjust the screw will break easily.Should have a locknut on it.
