The market is very soft right now. You can pick up project cars CHEAP. If you had the extra cash now would be the time to buy. I feel the market will rebound back on the values of the classics once everything starts to settle down.
I drove to Frisco TX and paid close to 10k for my 72 vert in boxes. It had most of the options I wanted and at the time I couldnt find a project vert under 14k. I also agree, figure what it would cost to get it back in shape and triple it (okay, at least double it).
In todays market I would figure a box project could be had for around 8K.
