Default Headers for my 81'

All,

I've decided to go with dual exhaust on my 81'. I'v already lined up a shop to run all new 2.5" exhaust system. The only thing I need to do is remove the old system and install the new headers, that why I'm looking for headers that will fit without modifications, if that's possible.

What headers would be the best to purchase and easiest to install? I'm trying to keep my budget down, I don't need $1000 headers, just looking for decent quality and performance. Need ya'll advice.

Thanks
Houston, Tx

My ceramic dynomax fit well and only run around $300. However, I can't comment on how to install them with the engine in the car. I had the engine out and installed then on the engine then set it in the car. I think you may have to install most any header from underneath.

I'd take a look at the Hedman Elite ceramic coated headers. They have extra thick 3/8" flanges and are made from 14 gage tubing.

Scott,

Can I install the HED headers with the engine in the car? From the top or from underneath?

Thanks

You typically have to get the car off the ground a few feet and install from below. You'll may also have to remove your dip stick in order to install the drivers side.

I put Hooker Ceramic Metalic headers on my '81 last year. You will have to disable the complete A.I.R. system, which also means a new carb, a new Intake manifold, and a new ignition system. I also had a custom x-pipe exhaust installed. In addition to the Hooker headers I used an Edelbrock intake and carb., and also an MSD High Spark ignition with the spark box. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. I used the stock mufflers, but they might be the next to go...

The reason you have to disconnect the A.I.R. system is because it is integrated with the exhaust and the pump. AND the computer adjusts the carburetor and timing based on, among other things, recirculated emissions. Good Luck. It won't be cheap...

I can send you pictures if you like.

I installed Dynomax full length ceramic headers on my '80 myself with no problem. They replaced block huggers that melted my motor mounts.

Does your 81 have the extra hole in the trans crossmember for the second pipe to pass through? If not, I'm sure somebody has a suggestion about how to handle that.

Sidepipes fix that problem.

The stock '81 cross member does not have holes through it. It's been a while since I've seen my stock cross member but I believe the exhaust just ran under it. I've got the Keisler cross member in now from my tranny conversion and side pipes.

I've posted detailed instructions for modifying the '80-'82 crossmember for true dual exhaust.

Let me know if you can't find them.

My '81 has nasty old rusty headers on it that the PO put on. The cars came with O2 sensors also, so as mentioned, you will basically have to ditch the carb and distributor if you want to run new exhaust. I always planned to do so myself anyway. I'll be starting that phase of the project in a month or so when a new crate motor goes in.

I am leaning toward the Dynomax headers myself, just to keep the cost down on a ceramic coated set. For a bit more money, you might consider a set of Stan's Tri-Y headers which perform extremely well on mild street engines (lots of torque).

any new exhaust pipes or headers can have a o2sensor bung hole put in ,so that you can hook up your o2 sensor .on my 82 with a computer ,the A.I.R. is deleted.did not affect the computer at all .the computer ,reads the exhaust o2 sensor then adj the timing and the carb .change the headers from underneath .have the shop put in the o2 sensor . car should run fine .
