Been saying I was going to buy a fire extinguisher. Today gave me a scare, so I'm gonna be buying one soon.(before the next outing)Driving along and I smell something burning. Looked at the wife and said "Hope thats not us." Sure enough I see smoke in the rear view mirror. Slowed quickly and pulled to the side of the freeway. Looks like oil came out from around the fuel pump. It was spraying onto the exhaust. I limped off the freeway and it had stopped. Guess when the pressure is up it was leaking. Drove to lunch and home on surface streets no problem. After it cools down its back into the garage to plan repairs. Just glad there was no fire.
You are one lucky man, a friend of mine had a 90 chev truck and had a transmission leak that he was going to fix one day, but it leaked fluid on exhaust and next thing he knew his truck burnt to the ground.
As I was reading your thread, I felt as if I were reading as scary mystery novel. I felt scared that it was going to end ugly. I am glad that you and the wife made it home okay, and that the car will live to ride another day.

Had the same exact experience years ago with my first 77 Vette. I had just passed another car on a two lane country road and was looking in the rear view mirror to make sure I had cleared the other car before entering back into the lane in front of him. To my horror, all I could see was a massive smoke screen behind me (I don't think the other driver could see anything except shear darkness) Same as you, I immediately pulled over and popped the hood to find that my fuel pump was blowing oil onto the right hand exhaust pipe. Pretty scary, but I was lucky that day too. Glad to hear all turned out ok for you.

Was the pump leaking oil? Or was the fuel pump block plate leaking?
