Default Complete headlight Assembly removal

has anyone removed their headlight assembly on an 81? I would like to remove the assemble as a complete unit and set it on my work bench to work on it. Is this a big deal? I already have the motor and radiator out. Thanks in advance.

I'm not real sure about the 81 but the older models were held in with 4 bolts. The hard part will be getting the unit down past the bumper assembly.

I just took mine out of my 73 this week and with the engine and radiator out it should be a breeze. It took me about 20 minutes to get mine out and thats with the engine and radiator in the car but the hood was off and I took mine out from the top. I had to weld the frame assembly back togther.

4 bolts hold them in.

You will have to disassemble the unit to get it out unless you take the bumper off the car. (hard bumper and COVER) So this kinda negates getting the WHOLE assembly out in one piece to work on it.

Then you will have a good old time putting it back together in the car. (dont ask me how I know)

Seriously you can unbolt the 4 bolts.... Might only be 3 really. But then you got NO place for the unit to go. There is just no room to maneuver it out in one piece. This assumes the car is running and complete of course.

Did the assembly lift straight up and out? I have the bumper off on my 71 and removed the bezel already and wondering if I should remove the entire assembly or just the headlight and cover? I am painting mine Ontario Orange in two weeks (yes, original color).

Remove the lower panel and they should come out from the bottom side on the 80-82 models.

Mark the original mounting locations so you'll get back to stock alignment (close, anyway) when install time comes.
