Once the suspension and motor are done, hopefully sometime before it gets too cold, I am going to start saving up for a paint job. I'm going to do my best to prep it myself first, stripping it with chemical stripper first, body work, etc. Fact is, I don't have the kinda money to be able to pay someone to do all of that.
Anyway, I wanted to run this by you guys. There is something I have been seeing around that I kinda like. It looks like it's just a coat of primer, and then black powder coat over it. I have seen it on a miata at some auto cross events, and I have to say, it's actually kinda nice. It gives it a very matte black look, almost stealth like.
What do you guys think of that on a C3?
Mine, when I'm done, is gonna have the LeMans style fixed lights, L88 hood, and 2000 corvette wheels with low pro tires.
I have it pictured in my mind, and it looks downright nasty.
vortec style heads, aluminum intake, summit headers with 2.5 inch piping, and still havn't bought a cam yet, but the goal is 300 rwhp. I'm gearing more towards handling, than straight line speed, though. She tops out a 120.
Satin paint (not just black) has found its way from the Street Rod world to the race/pro touring/hot rod guys. IMHO I think Panic's car looks awesome.
I wouldn't use powder coat, Spies-Hecker make an awesome 2 part rally black that is ideal for what you want to do, I use it for suspension parts, brackets and just painted my buddys steel 32 street rod in it....drop me a PM when your ready to paint, can probably help you out.
Matt are you gonna go Matte Black too? That does look very cool.
I'm thinkin about it...I also so a matte blue similar to the jetstream blue that looked amazing...it's a harley custom color I think. I like the concept, just not sure on practicality.
Oh, I'm not going to be painting it for a few years to come, unless I win the lottery, lol.
I just like having a plan in my hear, or on paper.....;and final goal, if you will. That way, i don't have to go back and redo things.
And yes, it's decided now....matte black is pretty damn sexy, and the way I want to go. Mine won't look as cool as panic's......but it's gonna be pretty darn cool, if I say so myself.
Don't know how it would work on a large scale, but I painted a 1956 Harley Black Primer, then hand painted a rose on both sides using indian ink for the colors. Cleared it with Acrylic Enamel PPG with two semi heavy sprays just wet enough to make the ink bleed a small bit. After it dried over night I wet sanded with 400 and really laid my wet coats down. I can't even describe how mysteriously deep the black looked, and the roses looked like they were floating off of it. Really nice effect.

^^^^^ Man I wish I had pics of some of the stuff I did back then. Way before the digital age.
I remember a party my sister had and we were all sitting around the yard, one of the girls came over and sat on my lap and said "How does it feel to know you painted every bike here?" I didn't realize it but there were 29 antique to brand new Harley's sitting in the yard and I had painted everyone of them......... It felt good.
Somebody has been trying to sell a modified '69 that's flat black in the For Sale section for quite a while. Lots of home made parts, console, etc. Wants a lot of money. There's pics there.
Rat Rod meets Corvette these days.
If you aren't planning to paint for a few years, the whole flat black thing might be out of vogue by then. I remember putting a TPI in my '63 roadster in the mid 90s... it was so cool at the time, and it was almost out of date by the time the project was done.
I agree with the poster who said don't put chrome all over it... blows the concept.
Unless you plan on repainting in a couple years (3-5) I'd shy away from the whole flat/matte look. The fashion is at a peak right now and will fade away just like the Teals of the 90's, the Miami Vice florals of the 80's, and the customs of the 70's. If you plan on keeping this car long term or even trying to sell it in a few, I'd stay away from the matte finishes.
Just my $.02.
