Default Build sheet question

I already have the Dealer invoice for my car and wondered if there is a way of obtaining a copy of original Build sheet for my 1980 Vette?

I do not mean any of the eBay specials!

I have looked at the NCM website and all I can see are 1981 and newer.

I know that some build sheets have been lost, however if there are dealer invoices available for 1979 cars why the build sheet comes 1981 onwards?

Thank you
Paul

I bought a '79 a few weeks ago and found my original build sheet now 30 years old on the top of the fuel tank. I was able to remove it by removing the gas fill door and rubber boot around the filler neck. I reached in at about 11:00 and carefully pulled it out.

Remember it's very old and very delicate so be careful. Some have indicated they have found a build sheet behind the cluster between the tach and speedo.

Other than what you might find on your own vehicle I don't think you can get an official build sheet for your car.

Here's some more info on build sheets that might be of interest to you.

No build sheets but here is some more info you might be interested in. Maybe you can get the restoration package for your vehicle.

I got a copy of the dealer invoice for my 82 back when they were free. It is always a hit at the car shows. As for the Restoration Pack, definately call and get one. It has all kinds of info in it. Just my thoughts!

The best part is I do have my original build sheet still on top of the fuel tank.

I have removed my spare wheel carrier and when you look at a certain angle you can just see the build sheet.

I have tried to pull it out, however as soon as I touched it I broke off a little piece as it is sooooo fragile.

The big question is:

Should I leave it there as originally intended and risking loosing it or should I take it out?

Paul

P.S I have just answered my own question
Should I leave it there as originally intended and risking loosing it or should I take it out?
Well it is raining outside again so I am going to drop the fuel tank and preserve the build sheet.

Pictures on the way

Really is that true I just started to take down my gauge cluster to remove my front lamp harness but did not look or think to look there.

I decided that the sooner I took it off the gas tank the quicker I could stop the deterioration. 30 years on the tank is enough. If you leave it there it will continue to deteriorate. Once off you can scan it and then put it away in a hermedicly sealed room you specially built for it with a relative humidity of 50% and a 70*F constant temp and no light.

Any luck reaching in through the gas filler area like I did?

One other thing about the build sheet on the tank. Mine was secured to the tank by a single strip of glue about an inch wide running across the middle of the sheet. I lifted the sheet until I felt the glued part. I then very carefully used a spatula to release the glue from the tank.

Don't force anything. If it doesn't give....STOP! Or you'll tear the sheet.

I did some edits on your last question cause I wasn't sure what you were asking but if the question with edits represent the information you seek...than the answer follows.

When Corvette production was moved from St Louis to Bowling Green in 1981, build sheet records were saved. In contrast when operations were moved, St Louis went through a de-papering process and all records were destroyed. Invoices that can be purchased today from Corvette built before 1981, come from the shipper copies some of which have been found and others purported to still be in circulation. The shipper copies come from the truckin company that shipped Corvettes from the factory to the dealer.

Only if it's still taped to the fuel tank. Your invoice has much more information on it than the build sheet (if the build sheet is still there). The invoice was actually compiled and printed from the information on the build sheet, but has much more specific information the build sheet doesn't have. Date of shipment, estimated date of delivery, original dealer name and address, fees, charges, prices, etc.

Note build sheet taped to tank.

If you have the dealer invoice and all you want is a "COPY" of the build sheet. Then make it yourself. Find an example of the the Landscape build sheet, build the template in a graphics program or ADOPE Writer and fill it in with the information from your Dealer Invoice.

I have my original build sheet and sent it off to the NCM and they in turn sent it to a guy they know and had the dealer invoice made from the data on the build sheet. Mine is a St. Louis 1981 Corvette.
