I bought all new wiring and a new neutral safety switch because the everything I've looked at in this car has BUBBA's fingerprints all over it. The new switch I bought is the one on top already mounted, the one I took out is the bottom one. What's the difference? Why does the bottom one have a third connector spliced into it? Also, what's the purpose of these switches anyways...

The purpose of the switch is to only allow the car to start in neutral or park. Never seen one with three contacts and the extra connector. Is it possible that it is for another GM vehicle? Someone here will have the answer.
Neutral start switch is to prevent starts in anything be neutral [w/ manual trans.] or neutral/park [w/ auto trans.]. It also has the backup light switch in it, when you go into Reverse. Since battery is disconnected, use an ohmmeter to determine when each switch is made and that it works in the proper gears. There is adjustment capability via slots for the mounting screws. Make sure that connection is 'made' everywhere in the ranges it should occur...and that there is NO connection made anywhere in the other ranges. Then lock it down and button it up. As for the 'extra' connector...I have no idea, but I imagine that "Bubba" found a junk part out of another GM car that kinda did the right thing.... The NSS for your automatic car should only have two.
