I am asking you all for the correct tone of black to use on my ac compressor. Flat, satin, or gloss. I have a rebuilt unit new in the box that sat on a shelf somewhere for many years. The sticker on top says Frigidaire remanufactured. The color is more like a flat black. would this be correct for my 73 or should I painstakingly strip and repaint it? I would like it to look as correct as possible. Thanks all
Thanx......I stand corrected But I could swear that one of my books states either semi or gloss black just like some of the other parts that got either color

You could be right the 70-72 NCRS Technical Information & Judging Guide says that it is semi gloss black.
I think a lot of times at the factory it was what ever paint they picked up that day. Oh shi!! weren't those supposed to be semi gloss not gloss black? Oh well.
I've never seen a factory-painted compressor that was anything other than semi-gloss black. Gloss black paint would be out of place in a GM engine compartment...regardless of what some 'expert' says in a book....

Yeah, a lot of gloss useage tends to make things look overrestored.
I noticed the belt guard on your AC compressor. I don't have one on my '69, so I was curious if that was something that was added in later years, or if I'm just missing mine.
I used to work in a manufacturing facility, and I know what happens to most machine guards if someone isn't keeping track...

I believe that would be an aftermarket piece. I see them for sale on fleabay all the time.
the guard is for if the compressor starts leaking oil it gets on hood and will seap through fiberglass and hood oil will cause paint to bubble and hood will be junk. these guards dont really protect much because leaked oil gets on belt and it gets all over hood anyway. hope this explains it, nutsy.
hey hammadown, are you saying they work? i was gonna get one until i read they dont work for reason i stated. if you know different let me know. i would much rather spend the 50 bucs or so on one than have to replace my original hood. thanks, nutsy.

Mine works... I wiped the underside with a rag and there was a small amount of oil on it better than on the hood
